Coimbatore is a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. To the northwest is the centuries-old, Dravidian-style Arulmigu Subramaniyaswami Temple, Marudamalai. The city is colorful and intricately carved Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy Temple lies southeast of here. In the center, the Gass Forest Museum has a huge collection of preserved animals and tree trunks. Southeast, birds and butterflies inhabit Singanallur Lake.

When to visit: The tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with peak temperatures in Mar–May and a rainy monsoon season Oct–Nov. Popular times to visit include Apr–May. Thai Pongal (Jan) is an important Tamil harvest festival. For the Koniammam temple festival (Mar), devotees pull a towering, ornately decorated float through the city streets, while the Karthikai Deepam Festival of Lights (Nov/Dec) is celebrated with oil lamps and fireworks.
