Junagadh is a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Mahabat Maqbara is the huge 19th-century mausoleum of a local ruler, which showcases intricate Indo-Islamic architectural details. Uparkot Fort, founded around 300 BC, has city views from its ramparts. Within the fort are the stone-cut stepwells Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuwo, plus Buddhist caves. To the west, Darbar Hall Museum is housed in a former palace.

When to visit
Junagadh has a tropical climate, with high temperatures Mar–Jun, and heavy monsoon rainfall Jun–Sep. The milder, drier winter months (Nov–Feb) are a popular time to visit. The Bhavnath Fair (Feb/Mar), held in the small village of Bhavnath, worships Lord Shiva. As part of the festival, naked sadhu monks offer prayers at the Bhavnath Mahadev temple and bathe in the sacred water tank. Dances are performed at night during Navratri (Sep/Oct), a Hindu festival celebrating feminine divinity.
